RARA Basketball Overview:
The RARA recreational basketball program is designed to teach the fundamentals of basketball and team skills through competitive play. There are two sessions for our basketball program, a fall and winter session. The fall session begins September 24th and the winter session begins January 6th. The fall session is only for grades K-2nd Grade. The winter session is for grades K-12th Grade. All rosters in both sessions besides the high school league will be organized by where the players go to school.
Winter Session (January-March)
Junior Division (Kindergarten)- The Junior Division is an instructional league for players in kindergarten. This is a introductory league to organized basketball. Teams will be organized by where the players go to school and rosters will be posted by Christmas. The first official practice will be on January 6th. There will be 6 weeks of skill development practices followed by 4 weeks of games. All practices and games will be on Saturdays only.
Rookies Division (Grades 1st-2nd) – The Rookies Division is coed, played on 8 foot basketball hoops which allows for higher scoring games. This league is completely non-competitive with 5 weeks of practices and 5 weeks of scrimmage games with help from officials and coaches throughout the games. All games and practices will be on Saturdays starting January 6th and will be at Long Meadow Elementary.
Prep Division(Grades 3rd-4th)- Teams will play 3 practices and 6 games with a single elimination playoffs to follow the regular season. All games and practices will be on Saturdays starting January 6th. Although some leeway is give to beginner players, officials call pretty tight game in an effort to teach, as well enforce the rules. Coaches are parent volunteers and players will play on regulation rims (10'). Teams must play man defense in the first half and cannot steal the dribble until the second half. 28.5 inch ball is used for game.
Pro Division (Grades 5th-8th)- Teams will play 3 practices and 6 games with a single elimination playoffs to follow the regular season. This division uses MHSAA rules and officials call it by the book. All games and practices will be on Saturdays starting January 6th. Coaches are parent volunteers and regulation rims (10') are used along with a 28.5.
Legends Division (Grades 9-12) – This is a team registration, Teams must have a coach/manager for their team. Team name and manager must be submitted to RARA for our staff to enter the team into the system allowing players to pick the team name from the drop down menu when registering. Most teams create a twitter account for their team and follow RARA Leaks on twitter for live updates, preseason activities and podcasts. www.RARALeaks.com All players must be in 9th-12th grade. Teams will play 8 regular season games with a single elimination tournament following the regular season.
